Placement: The Minor Arcana

Description: A young disc carver. Six or seven (depending on the deck) of his pieces hang on a tree. Another lies on the ground. In the Rider Waite deck, the carver is still working on the eighth disc, using a hammer and chisel. In the Sola Busca version, (featured above) the carver is finished. Finished, as in pecked clean by the crows, one of which still lurks on a branch above.

Right side up:

The theme of this card is labour. The carver is dedicated to his craft. It appears that nothing else concerns him but his work. Perhaps he loves the repetitive task for its own sake, or maybe he works to forget. On the other hand, he is making money, something that is, from what I have heard, enjoyable to have.

Upside down:

Fraud. He is literally making money. Does he not know that counterfeit is illegal in most countries, including wherever the tarot characters reside?*

*I have personally met the Fool and the Ace hand. It is a long story, a sordid tale that begins with A Murder.

Classic Eight of Coins deaths:

  • Exhaustion
  • Toxic work environment
  • Fatal chisel injury
  • Failure to attend WHMIS training
  • Overly tight necktie
  • Uniform doused with a skin-absorbing poison
  • Insisting that hardhats, goggles and anti-shark spray are not required on Casual Fridays
